A Review of Science and Controversies


In this March 2008 webinar, Dr. Harvey Anderson, a recognized expert in the study of sugars in health, reviewed the science related to high fructose corn syrup and body weight. Dr. Theresa Nicklas, one of today's leading nutritional epidemiologists, discussed the weight of the epidemiological evidence related to 100% fruit juice, sweetened beverages and body weight in children and adolescents.

High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) in Beverages: Impact on Appetite & Food Intake

Dr. Anderson discusses the impact of the introduction of HFCS into the food supply 30 years ago on the ratio of fructose to glucose in the US diet obesity rates, changes in availability of sugars in the US food supply relative to other energy components of the diet, and his research findings regarding the impact of HFCS on satiety, food intake and levels of ghrelin, insulin and uric acid.

Dr. Nicklas reviews the body of the scientfic evidence regarding the relationship between the consumption of sweetened beverages and 100% juice and weight status in children and adolescents, and discusses the limitations of epidemiological data that could explain conflicting study findings and the variance in children’s BMI related to demographics, income, tv viewing, and diet.
